2. 修饰对象不同
“instead”只能修饰动词或是句子。比如 “In Italy are too expensive. Instead, we're going to Greece”，这里 “instead” 修饰了后面整个句子，表示去希腊这个动作替代去意大利。
“instead of”后面接具体替代对象，像 “Now I can walk to work instead of going by car”，“going by car” 就是被替代的对象。
3. 位置特点
“instead”位置灵活，可根据表达需要放句首或句尾。在英语口语交流里，很多人习惯把 “instead” 放句尾，这样表达比较自然。
“instead of” 可以放句首或句尾，但它所在句中位置更多出现在句子中间，因为它要引出被替代的内容。
4. 词义侧重点
“instead” 句中的动作是要去做的。例如 “I'm too tired to play football today. I'm going to stay at home instead”，呆在家里就是接下来要做的事。
“instead of” 句中的动作或是对象是要被替代的。如 “Now I can walk to work instead of going by car”，开车就是被步行上班替代的动作。
5. 搭配形式
“instead” 一般单独使用，常见搭配就是和句子配合，起到替换动作或情况的作用。
“instead of” 后面搭配丰富，比如 “instead of + 名词”，像 “Small pickled onions can be used instead of sliced ones”；“instead of + V - ing”，如 “Instead of complaining about what's wrong, be thankful for what's right”。
6. 实际运用场景
在日常口语交流中，“instead” 用得很频繁，简单表达替代情况。比如和朋友讨论活动安排，说“I don't want to go to the park. Let's go to the cinema instead”。
在书面语，尤其是正式写作里，“instead of” 用得较多，能更准确清晰表达替代关系。比如学术论文里 “The experiment used a new method instead of the traditional one”。
